30 reasons why Fox News is not legit →
So, Fox News has altered the game by unchaining itself from the moral groundings of U.S. journalism. And guess what? There is no industry shame being rained down on the outlet. The rest of the press not only doesn’t complain, it defends Fox News and even apologizes on its behalf, which is what we’ve seen unfold for the last two weeks. (via azspot)

[A] new report from Arbor Networks suggests that Google’s traffic is approaching 10 percent of the net’s traffic, and that it’s got so much fiber optic cable, it is simply trading traffic, with no payment involved, with the net’s largest ISPs.

marco: Dan Meth’s latest video is great: Google Street View Guys A new College Humor cartoon! Ever wonder what it’s like for the dudes who have to drive those Google camera cars around? I think it’s a little something like this… The creative background, explained in this follow-up, is very well done. I think I like the follow-up music video even more than the original short.

Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization |... →
Does hipster culture the mark of the end of western culture? Does anyone care? We are a lost generation, desperately clinging to anything that feels real, but too afraid to become it ourselves. We are a defeated generation, resigned to the hypocrisy of those before us, who once sang songs of rebellion and now sell them back to us. We are the last generation, a culmination of all previous...

The Obama “Hope” Poster Case — Whoa! →
A troubling new development: Fairey’s counsel has now admitted that Fairey tried to destroy documents that would have revealed which image he actually used. Fairey’s counsel has also admitted that he created fake documents as part of his effort to conceal which photo was the source image, including hard copy printouts of an altered version of the Clooney Photo and fake stencil patterns of the...

But it was also fed by the fact that we who live with so much information are no longer used to admitting that we don’t really know what’s going on. Surely someone knows what’s going on; how can it be otherwise? “Your friends might make you sick and cause you to gain weight,” Christakis says, “but they’re also a source of tremendous happiness. The Gervais Principle is this: Sociopaths, in their own best interests, knowingly promote over-performing losers into middle-management, groom under-performing losers into sociopaths, and leave the average bare-minimum-effort losers to fend for themselves. It scares me how accurate this feels.

A passionate call for humanities education and its necessity for democracy: In our time, orthodoxy is economic. Popular culture fetishizes it, our entertainments salaam to it (how many millions for sinking that putt, accepting that trade?), our artists are ranked by and revered for it. There is no institution wholly apart. Everything submits; everything must, sooner or later, pay fealty to the...

Student Refuses to Say Pledge →
An interesting objection to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance (via azspot): Their son told them last weekend he had decided to no longer stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance at school because he didn’t believe there is liberty and justice for all, especially when it comes to gay rights. “To say them (words) and not mean them would be a lie,” Jay said.
